Looking your best can sometimes feel like a full-time job. But you try to do your best by always washing off your makeup, investing in expensive skin creams and serums, and wearing sunscreen to protect yourself. Yet you can’t seem to stop those wrinkles from forming or waking up to dry, dull skin. Well, that’s because there has been one step missing from your skin care regime: microneedling!
How It Works
Microneedling is a treatment that works in a fairly simple way. Also known as collagen-induction therapy, this treatment is able to prompt your skin to begin producing collagen and elastin. As you may well know, collagen is a type of protein found in our bodies that provides skin with structure and moisture. Generally, as we age, we stop producing collagen, which is what leads to all those fine lines and wrinkles.
Microneedling induces collagen through the use of a device called a SkinPen®. This tool contains several medical-grade needles that, when moved smoothly over your skin, leave behind tiny holes. Your body will sense these holes and register them as microtraumas that will need healing. As such, your skin will rush blood to the areas and will up the production of collagen.
The procedure is very minimally-invasive. It can be done right in our office, and usually takes no longer than about one hour. Before we begin, we may apply a numbing cream to your face so that you will not experience any discomfort. There are also no side effects associated with microneedling; although, you may experience a bit of redness after your treatment, which is a telltale sign that its working.
This treatment has a range of different benefits that can have you looking your best.
Fine Lines and Wrinkles
As we said above, more collagen is the key to getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles. Microneedling can be used to treat those deep lines on your forehead, frown lines around your mouth, and any other wrinkles that have appeared on your face.
Microneedling also improves the look and texture of your skin. The microtraumas that the SkinPen® leaves behind will encourage your skin to actually go through a restructuring process where it will form new blood vessels and build new collagen cells. Usually, our patients report that their skin is smoother and tighter right after their treatment.
Last, microneedling can help reduce the look of scarring, especially those scars that have been caused by past acne breakouts. Scars, basically, are caused when your skin doesn’t heal in the right away. The SkinPen® can wear away old scar tissue, while also encouraging new healthy cell repair.
